Dato' Choo Ching Hwa, who passed away suddenly on 19 April 1996 at the age of 64, had an illustrious career - in both politics and industry. Straightforward and a man of high principles, he was recognized for his organizational ability and far sighted visions and in the heydays of late 1970s and 1980s, Dato' Choo was entrusted with the onerous responsibilities by being appointed to the boards of directors of major corporations.
Nilai Memorial Park is the brainchild of Dato' Choo who pioneered the development of modern, professionally planned, park-like cemeteries in Malaysia. Dato' Choo's pioneering spirit and foresight have spawned within a matter of years several thriving modern cemeteries (or 'memorial parks' as they are commonly referred to) all evidently modeled on the concept of Nilai Memorial Park. He was happy to witness the phenomenon and was pleased in the knowledge that he had played a leading role in elevating the memorialisation industry in Malaysia from one of eeriness and morbidity to the realm of dignity and respect. Indeed he had ushered in gradually but steadily a cultural change in a significant section of the Malaysian population's perception of, and attitude towards, death and death-care.
Dato' Choo is survived by his wife, Sei Keng, three sons and two daughters. Now that Dato Choo lives in eternal peace, three of his children (eldest son Frank, second son Keng and younger daughter Nancy) have taken over the mantle - with Frank as the head of the Xiao En Group - to uphold his ideals and steer the group to greater heights.
